Cuttting back for the cannas

Some of my most favorite plants in the yard and garden are the cannas shown here. They can provide texture, and their deep red almost purple large leaves provide a nice larger plant to offset the smaller ones. I also have almost forty butterfly flowering plants in my yard. They are a favorite for the bees, birds, and butterflies throughout the summer. Looking closely, you can see in the foreground that I’ve been cutting them back as well. Depending when the first frost occurs in late fall we may get another bloom on the plants before winter. They can also serve as a small hedge which I like.

I try to leave seed heads on the ground through the fall and winter for the birds. Unfortunately, not many of my neighbors grow flowers so my yard becomes a beacon or haven for the wildlife in our neighborhood.
