I’ve finished starting my seeds for my late summer and fall garden below. I’m aways look for perennial seeds to start for my raised beds and gardens It’s still a little early for some to start growing seeds, but I have a greenhouse I can use to transition my plants later to the garden. I grew enough so that my friends who come by can take some home too. I always plant the whole seed packet, so I’ll have enough to share with friends.
Things continue to grow until it freezes typically in late October or November, or with current weather maybe never so we should plan accordingly.
Seeds I started today:
Tray #1 Tomatoes (Beefsteak, Roma, Better boy, San Marzano)
Tray #2 Pumpkins (Big Max and Halloween blend)
Tray #3 Cantaloup (Heart of Gold, Sierra Gold, and Hale’s best Jumbo)
Tray #4 Watermelon (Bush sugar baby and crimson sweet)
Tray #5 Marigolds (Climax mixed colors), Delores chives, and Harlequin mixed colors columbine
Tray #6 Cucumbers (Garden bush, Straight eight, and Muncher)
Tray #7 Brussel Sprout (Groninger), Broccoli (DeCicci), Cauliflower (Early snowball)
Seven trays… that will keep me busy watering over the next few weeks. I’ll add more perennials as I find them to get started throughout the summer. In a month or so, I’ll begin moving the above plants to my greenhouse. Stay tuned. If you need any of the above for later in the summer or fall, please feel free to drop by.
Also, I like to develop what is called an “institutional memory” of the varieties that are easiest for me to grow from seed, in the Spring what hardens off and plants in the garden with the least amount of trouble, and what flavor we prefer of vegetables we plant. And of course, the continuing saga of keeping the chickens in their pen. They see me digging in the raised beds and they of course want to join me to look for worms. I’m waiting to hear of solutions.
