End of June gardening update.

Pictured are my new plants now in my greenhouse.

Weather is typical of southwest Missouri. We break the record for rainfall in April and May. Now in mid-June things are very dry with little or no rain for over a week. Well, it says we may get rain tomorrow. I hope because everything is dry and beginning to sag a little. I notice my shasta daisies and all my Missouri native perennials holding up pretty well, but they need a long drink of water. Mostly time spent in maintenance keeping everything in good order and deadheading daises.

It is beneficial to seek opportunities to incorporate seldom-used words in one’s vocabulary, such as “anomalies”, that refer to things that are abnormal. In my garden and flowerbeds, during periods of heavy rain, not only did my flowers flourish abundantly, but unwanted weeds thrived as well.

I’ve moved almost everything up from my basement nursery to the greenhouse. I can keep a closer eye on them here. I repotted some smaller perennials that I left downstairs including my johnny jump ups, blanket flowers that still need repotting, bachelor butter, and orange butterfly flowers. Today I brought out zinnias and hollyhock.

I’ve ordered some Joe Pye Weed seeds I’d like to get started now so I can set the out this fall. I hope to move all my small perennials to my backyard raised beds this fall in late October or November and mulch really well with the straw from my chickens to overwinter.
