Caring for small trees and planting more seeds…

It’s a busy time. First cutting back the old growth from last year in the front yard and re-staking the jane magnolia trees. I have several small trees in the front yard including

  • Two jane magnolias
  • Two dogwood (one white and one pink) already here in front yard
  • A Japanese maple tree
  • Two plum trees
  • Two dwarf purple lilac trees

A few years ago, city utilities had someone cut the large trees I had away from the power lines. They did such a poor job, I had them take them out. I replaced them with smaller trees that will not grow tall enough to interfere with the powerlines in the future. Small trees should be staked and is important to develop the tree’s canopy. These small trees that are generally 5 or 6 feet tall will one day get to twenty to twenty-five feet tall.

Then this afternoon planting six trays of vegetable seeds including: crimson sweet watermelon, heart of gold cantaloupe, black beauty eggplant, Fordhook zucchini summer squash, and two varieties of yellow squash (early prolific straightneck, summerpacF1 (one variety stays straight the other has curved neck), and finally san marzano tomato for this year.

Tomorrow morning we’ll take a truck load of yard cuttings to the recycling center.
