2025 Home and garden show follow-up

I really enjoyed helping out at the master gardener booth at the home show yesterday. Lots of people came with questions about gardening, take some seeds, signed up for the email, or to maybe take the class to become a master gardener. Spending time with like-minded friends was a treat. We also gave a reminder about the Maste Gardener plant sale in late April.

The home and garden show every year is a reminder that there are lots of people manning booths distributing good information to help us to become more aware of opportunities for growth and share our own interests and expertise. In addition to multiple venders selling stuff, three booths really stood out that we should learn more about. First was the Ozarks Food Harvest booth. I greatly admire people who make concerted efforts to make sure people get healthy and sufficient food to eat in our community. There are a lot of hungry people who don’t get enough to eat, making an effort to help make sure they do is a great thing. I know I plan to try to do more with my own gardening activities this Spring and summer.

Second, I was very interested in the SMU Darr College of Agriculture booth (sorry as a 1976 grad it will always be SMSU)… They are always sharing good and best techniques for what’s new and how their students can contribute to our knowledge about growing stuff. Third, would be the City of Springfield Environmental Service staff and their outreach in the community. They make a concerted effort to educate us on best practices to reduce our trash going to the landfill, promote recycling, and to think more about what we can return to the soil through composting in our gardens. Now if we could do more about nonsense about the trash pick-up in the city. It is a disgrace… in my opinion.

A lot of good people sharing their knowledge and wisdom about efforts that protect our environment with information and products that are good for our homes and nature. Learning how to expand our own vision beyond ourselves is always time well spent.
