The weather is amazing, etc…

(Another view from inside my greenhouse)

We seem to gravitate to what is our innermost sense of well-being. For me, it’s both Eastern philosophy and gardening. Sometimes my writing just flows as if asking for more. Like nourishing tidbits written to persuade myself that all is well with the world and nature when a combination or balance is followed. There’s the I Ching again and need for balance and boundaries.

I’ve been busy tending to my plants and preparing for plant sales and labels I need that will help others to see what I have and how they may fit into their own plans. Holding back the plants from getting too big or tall seems like the order of the day. Always anxious to get started I usually start my seeds a couple weeks too early, but they’ll be okay, I hope.

This weather is amazing. By the weather forecast we may not see another night of freezing temperatures this Spring. although it is better to be safe than sorry.  I have started setting out some cold tolerant perennials from the greenhouse but have covered them mainly because the wind is not healthy for them… I have them covered in a hooplike structure. I’m looking for more materials to cover more of my raised beds so I can set out more plants.

I put down new straw in the area where my chickens stay and have tried to make the rest of the yard off-limits. I also re-dug (put in place) a few of the potatoes the chickens had dug) and put down straw over the entire raised bed. Unfortunately, old habits die hard, and a couple chickens have existing favorite egg laying areas either next to the deck or behind a tree. I’m coaxing them to stay put in their area.  They seem to be adjusting but do look longingly outside their defined home. They’re typical two-year-olds, you try to set limits and tell them where they can’t go and of course that’s where they set out first.

I’ve got lots of painting and maintenance still to do but will hold off until next month (May), until all the plant sales are over. May is when the fun in my yard really begins for real. Finally, for about the tenth time this morning my brother-in-law asked me why I bother to grow and give away all these plants? He says it is a lot of work to give them all away. Some things you just can’t explain you just have to do.
