I have hesitated to say too much about my yard and gardens because they appear to be neglected. We have had no rain for well over a month and are seriously in a drought. I feel for farmers who depend on even a minimum of rainfall for what they’ve planted and this ninety plus degree heat plus not rain means their efforts may have been for naught. I started cutting back as shown above, but everything is so dry I decided to wait.
Trying to water with no rain in this weather with as much as I have would require watering all most every day. Thankfully my perennials seem to be holding up, but they are getting very brittle with little or no moisture. I’ve started cutting things back sooner by a month or so than usual, but what little moisture is there robs what’s left if I cut too much back… so I’ll play wait and see for another week or so.
My back yard has almost gone totally to the chickens. I’ve still got some peppers which they don’t like and potatoes they can’t see. It has been too hot and dry. If I was ten years younger, I might put in an in-ground sprinkler system like I had in Florida. But with this high temperature and no rain at all it’s not worth doing. I still am playing with my tomato plants. They are about two feet tall (in pots) and seem to be doing fine.
