(Pictured above is an image from my greenhouse today)
All my plants downstairs and in the greenhouse look really good. There are about 25 trays in the greenhouse and the same in the basement under lights. Almost all are for plant sales described earlier. Tomatoes seem to have survived transplanting, hopefully they won’t grow too big before the upcoming plant sales. The remaining plants are for my own gardens. When to start seeds under lights with corresponding planting dates always is one of life’s great mysteries. All seeds are not the same and looking to averages on the back of the seed packages seem the way to go. We still have about ten days before the anticipated last freeze date, and I am anxious to get both seeds for annuals in the ground and plants I have started outside as well.
It’s the transitioning from indoors to outdoors that’s important to consider now. Some plants are more cold tolerant like kale, but most there is no hurry. Transitioning to cooler temperatures is always best. It is important to note that we have had a relatively mild winter and the ground never froze. If the ground is too cold for the plants when you plant them, they will just sit there until the grounds warms up.
Also, we have had so much rain (almost five inches a couple days ago), that everything is growing pretty quickly. I’ve already mowed my front yard once. I still have too many wild onions to deal with… oh well. I have several hundred perennials in my front yard and now that everything has been cleared away from the winter, they look really good now with all the rain we’ve had.
I’m hanging planters from the top of my greenhouse now and plan to plant green beans before they get too big and out of control in them. It is an experiment, if successful they’ll look awesome. I mention this because as a master gardener for over thirty years, I am always trying something new or a little different to expand my knowledge to new areas to see what works and what doesn’t. Trying new vegetable varieties and types and color combinations of annual flowers is fun and brings joy to the effort. Also doing things that do not seem to take more effort is important, except that I keep adding too many new things.
