Mid-May garden updates

The picture above is of the Jane Magnolia and one of the dwarf lilac trees in my front yard. I’m showing now after the heavy rain last night because checking and re-staking both trees is important after the heavy rain. The purple lilac tree is especially heavy and will be re-staked today. And yes, the dandelions are thick, and I need to mow.

There is just so much for me to do after the rain we got overnight. It’s Saturday morning and I did not make it to Planet Unity with my plants. Too much rain and too wet…  This is the eighth year for Planet Unity, and this is the first time The Kongdan Foundation was a sponsor and didn’t have a plant booth. Rain overnight was very heavy and went until almost noon today. No damage here except I can see that I needed to re-stake the two dwarf purple lilac trees in my front yard and it looks like grass grew a couple inches overnight. The ground and grass are so wet it may be Tuesday or Wednesday before it’s dry enough to mow. One of the worst things that you can do to grass is trying to mow when it’s too wet.’

All of my flower beds in front yard need to be weeded and are ready for annuals. I have three that I have lots of that I’ve already started in the greenhouse. All need to be planted ASAP.  A tray of short marigolds for the front of the beds, two trays of zinnias that are getting a little tall that I’m trying something new. I’ve seen where you can just lay the stems down and secure a spot and they will continue to grow from there. I’ve always has a problem of them getting too tall and needing stakes. Hopefully this will help. Also, a new annual that I am anxious to try this year. A new annual that I’m trying is called the Daisy ‘Blue Disc African. I have two trays of these with about seventy-five plants that need to get into the ground and out of the greenhouse. What I usually do in late April/early May is after I weed and clean out a bed a final time and care for all the existing perennials, I add the annuals I want for this year, plus sprinkle seeds from other favorites like cosmos, cleome, and more zinnias. That sounds like a lot, but I try to have everything in place by Memorial Day.

I still have plant sales and almost forty trays of plants to harden off and get ready for next Saturday for the Master Gardener and Hillbilly Garden Club plant sales. Once we get past this next weekend, I can plant my own raised beds and finish putting straw down in the walkways in the back yard. Of course I’ll be writing everyday as well.

As I’ve mentioned before I usually have three priorities each day but sometimes don’t get to them.
