It’s just too hot!

Removing weeds and replacing them with new plants is always satisfying and fun, especially when it’s with plants you grew from seeds yourself. The area along the four-foot fence above is where I plant tomatoes and cucumbers, is a great replacement from the backyard since it gets better sunlight and is free from my chickens. A major incentive is that all these plants were in the greenhouse, which I’m trying to clear out because of the heat. I still have about ten trays of plants and will give most of them away.

What did I plant this morning? Pumpkins, cantaloup, cucumbers, watermelon (although they looked kind of picid), some broccoli, cabbage, and a few zinnias. When they get bigger, I’ll thin a little. I also want to plant a few more tomatoes on the other side of the fence.

When the temperature is consistently around ninety degrees it means it can get up to one hundred ten and above in the greenhouse. No number of fans or ceiling fans will remove enough the heat from directly overhead sunlight. Except the ceiling fan helps to remove the hot air. It’s only a problem between noon and four, but plants can dry out pretty quickly.  I could turn on air conditioner, but that defeats the purpose. This is a new experience with my greenhouse this summer and I am learning how best to monitor my own “micr0-climate”.

Later in the afternoon and early evening when the sun is not directly over the greenhouse I may turn on the air conditioner to cool things off a bit and watch a Cardinal game. GO CARDS!!!
