For myself, garden design is the unity of natural and man-made beauty through design, structure, and how we introduce plants to nature and our living environment. It is how we compliment and harmonize with nature, blending the two, that’s important. How what is design and what we plant create complimentary opposites that carry our eye from place to place. Our design flow is what gives us continuity in our yard and garden. Just as our lives. Why I like having a sense of nature and how we can complement our surroundings is important.
Our activities are not so much to change nature and our environment, as much to compliment what we find and bring it forward. Why the example of going native by planting perennials and combining design principals with more permanent structures become important. Over the coming months we’ll demonstrate methods that are in line with combining universal philosophies meant to enhance and protect what we find with what we do.
Gardening is so popular because it serves as an extension of ourselves. Not so much simply what we find in books, but how to implement and make nature work for ourselves. Learning to use resources to develop our (your) best practices.
Beyond planning, in a few weeks we will all begin getting the seed catalogs (I’ll discuss my favorites) that we get every year and sorting through seeds from last year. What seeds I will be starting and when… knowing when to start specific seeds and caring for seedlings.
We’ll plan for not only what we’ll plant in our yard and garden, but what plants we’ll grow to give away. I grow thousands of plants for the Master Gardener and Hillbilly Garden Club plant sales. I also grow plants for plant booths at Planet Unity and northside neighborhoods. I encourage others to do the same. Maybe not the same scale but learning to contribute for nature’s benefit and others. Maybe we’ll do some utube videos showing design and planting techniques.
